3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Book Me

A Southwest Nebraska Family Photographer’s Honest Perspective

Oof. What a title.

If it made you pause - good. That pause is intentional.

Because choosing a family photographer isn’t about finding someone with a nice camera or checking a box on your to-do list. It’s about trust. It’s about alignment. And it’s about choosing someone who understands that these seasons of life - pregnancy, newborn days, toddler years, growing families - are tender, fleeting and worth slowing down for.

As a family and newborn photographer based in Arapahoe, Nebraska, serving families throughout Southwest Nebraska, I believe the right photographer isn’t the right fit for everyone. And that’s not only okay - it’s important.

So here are three honest reasons why you shouldn’t book me… unless this approach truly feels like home to you.

Choosing the Right Family Photographer Starts with Feeling, Not Just Style

One of the simplest (and most overlooked) ways to know if a photographer is right for your family is to sit with their work for a moment longer than a quick scroll.

When you look through a photographer’s recent sessions, ask yourself:

  • Can I picture my family here?

  • Do these images feel natural or overly posed?

  • Are they too candid - or too structured?

  • Do they stir something in me?

Photography is deeply personal. Style matters - but so does process, personality and intention. Understanding how a photographer works before you ever inquire can save you disappointment later and help ensure your session feels aligned from the very beginning.

(This is something I dive deeper into in another blog post The Art of Connection.)

Here are three key elements that highlight my genuine commitment to providing a truly exceptional experience for all of my clients.

Let's dive right on into it.

Reason Number One: I’m Highly Involved in the Planning Process

If you’re looking for a photographer who simply shows up, snaps photos, and sends a gallery - this might not be the right fit.

From the moment you reach out, I’m involved. I guide you through the entire experience so nothing feels rushed, confusing, or overwhelming.

That includes:

  • Helping you choose locations around Arapahoe and surrounding Southwest Nebraska areas

  • Offering outfit and styling guidance so your images feel cohesive

  • Planning a session flow that works with your family - not against it

During your session, I provide gentle direction while allowing space for natural connection. You’ll never be left wondering what to do, but you also won’t feel overly posed. My goal is comfort, confidence, and images that feel like you.

This same level of care carries through every type of session I offer - from newborn photography to family and milestone sessions - because the experience matters just as much as the final images.

Reason Number Two: I Prioritize Light Over Convenience

I photograph outdoor family sessions almost exclusively during golden hour. That soft, glowing light shortly after sunrise or just before sunset.

Golden hour isn’t about trends. It’s about atmosphere.

That light brings warmth and depth, softens skin tones and creates images that feel timeless instead of dated. It allows moments to unfold naturally and gives your photos an emotional quality that midday light simply can’t replicate.

If flexibility around timing feels stressful, or if you’re hoping for a quick session squeezed into the middle of a busy day, this approach may not align with your season of life right now. But if you value imagery that feels intentional, calm and cinematic - this is where the magic happens.

(You can see examples of this lighting throughout my family portfolio.)

Reason Number Three: Authentic Moments and Genuine Connection

I believe the most meaningful family photographs aren’t built on perfect poses. They’re built on real connection.

During our session, I won’t ask you to stand stiffly or force smiles for the camera. Instead, I gently guide you into moments that allow connection to unfold naturally. I encourage laughter when it comes, quiet closeness when it’s needed, and space for your family to simply be together. The magic often lives in the in-between moments - the quick glances, the soft hugs, the way your child instinctively reaches for you.

As a family photographer serving Arapahoe and Southwest Nebraska, my approach is intentionally connection-driven. I’m not focused on children behaving perfectly or families performing for the camera. There is room for movement, emotion and imperfection. Because that’s where truth lives.

Every laugh, every embrace, every shared look tells part of your family’s story. My goal is to preserve those moments with care and intention, capturing your family just as you are - perfectly imperfect, deeply connected and beautifully real.

Why the Right Fit Matters

Photography is deeply personal.

The way a photographer sees the world, guides a session and tells a story will shape how you remember this season for years to come. And because of that, not every photographer is meant for every family - and that’s exactly how it should be.

But if you’re drawn to thoughtful planning, soft and intentional light and images that lead with emotion over perfection… if you value an experience that feels calm, guided and unhurried… then we may be a beautiful fit.

Because when the connection is right, your photos become more than images you scroll past. They settle into your home: on your walls, inside well-loved albums and woven into the everyday moments of your life.

And that, more than anything, is why choosing the right photographer matters.
